Short Groomsman Speech: 60- and 90-Second Examples

A short groomsman speech needs one relationship, one proof-filled memory, one sentence about the couple, and one clean toast.

See the complete groomsman speech desk: examples, tools, timing, and printables.

What fits in 60 or 90 seconds

Sixty seconds is roughly 110 to 140 spoken words. Ninety seconds is roughly 170 to 210. That is enough time to be personal if you do not spend half the speech apologizing, listing names, or explaining every detail of the friendship.

Choose a single emotional point. If the groom is loyal, tell the one scene that proves loyalty. If the couple makes each other braver, describe the change in one sentence. Depth comes from specificity, not duration.

The five-sentence short-speech formula

You can add one sentence of context to the memory for a 90-second version. Do not add a second story unless the first one is truly only a line.

  1. 1I'm [name], and I know [groom] as his [relationship].
  2. 2The quality I admire most in him is [quality].
  3. 3I saw it when [one-sentence memory].
  4. 4[Partner], together you [specific strength or change].
  5. 5Please raise a glass to [names]: may you [wish]. Cheers.

A 60-second groomsman speech

Good evening. I'm Chris, and I met Devon on our first day at work twelve years ago.

Devon is the person who shows up. When I moved apartments during the hottest weekend of the year, he arrived early, brought water for everyone, and stayed for the final box.

Riley, I see that same care in the life you two have built: thoughtful, funny, and generous to everyone around you. Please raise a glass to Devon and Riley. May you keep making the hard days lighter and the good days even better. Cheers.

A 90-second groomsman speech

I'm Andre, one of Malik's groomsmen and his friend since high school. Malik has always had a gift for making people feel included.

At our first school dance, he noticed a new student standing alone, crossed the entire gym, and pulled him into our terrible group photo. That student became one of our closest friends. Malik probably forgot the moment; the rest of us did not.

Jamie, you share that instinct. Together you build a table that keeps getting bigger, and every person here has felt it. To Malik and Jamie: may your home stay full of friends, music, second helpings, and the certainty that you chose well. Cheers.

Trim without losing the heart

Cut throat-clearing first: long greetings, nervous jokes, and phrases such as for those who do not know me. Then cut duplicate praise. Keep the specific noun, action, and final wish. Those are the parts guests remember.

Time the speech aloud rather than estimating from the page. Pause after the laugh and before the final toast. A calm 75 seconds feels shorter than a breathless 55.

How many words fit in 90 seconds?

Most people speak about 170 to 210 words in 90 seconds once natural pauses are included.

Should I memorize a short speech?
