Toast Speech Template: A Fill-in-the-Blanks Framework

A template should give you structure without making you sound generic. This one keeps the details personal.

The universal toast template

Use this as a first draft. Replace every bracket with real detail, then read it out loud and cut anything that sounds too formal.

  1. 1Good evening, everyone. For those I have not met, I am [name], and I know [honoree] as [relationship].
  2. 2When I think about [honoree], I always think about [specific memory].
  3. 3What I love about that story is that it shows [quality].
  4. 4That is the same quality you see in [another context or relationship].
  5. 5My wish for [honoree/couple/team] is [simple wish].
  6. 6So please raise a glass to [name], to [quality], and to [future]. Cheers.

Make the template sound like you

The template is only the scaffolding. Your job is to add the words only you would use. If you are casual, be casual. If you are naturally earnest, be earnest. Authentic beats impressive.

The easiest way to personalize the template is to add one sentence of sensory detail: what the room looked like, what someone said, or what the moment felt like.

A wedding version

Good evening, everyone. I am Jordan, Sam's brother. When I think about Sam and Riley, I think about the first time Riley came to our family dinner and somehow left with three inside jokes and a standing invite. What I love about that story is that it shows what they do together: they make people feel included. My wish for them is a home full of that same ease and laughter. Please raise a glass to Sam and Riley, and to a lifetime of making room for joy.

A birthday version

For a birthday, center the template on who the person is in everyday life, not just what they have accomplished. Birthdays are a good place for gratitude and warmth.

Try ending with: To Priya, to another year of making everyone around her feel braver, funnier, and better fed.

FAQ

Is it okay to use a toast template?

Yes. A template gives structure. The toast becomes personal when you add specific memories and your natural voice.

How many stories should a toast include?

Use one main story, or two very short examples if the toast is longer than three minutes.

Should a toast have a quote?

Only use a quote if it truly fits the person. A real memory is usually stronger than a famous line.
