How to End a Toast With a Strong Final Line

A toast ending should feel inevitable. It gathers the story, names the wish, and gives everyone permission to raise a glass.

Use the three-part ending

A strong ending has three parts: who the toast is for, what you wish for them, and the cue to raise a glass. You do not need a dramatic final sentence if those three pieces are clear.

  1. 1Name the person or couple.
  2. 2Name the wish: love, adventure, peace, success, healing, laughter.
  3. 3Invite the room: please raise a glass.

Wedding toast ending examples

Please raise a glass to Nora and Eli, to the life they are building, and to a love that keeps making room for everyone lucky enough to know them.

To the couple: may you always be each other's favorite place to come home to.

Birthday toast ending examples

To Ana: to another year of big laughs, brave choices, and the kind of friendship that makes everyone here feel lucky.

Please raise a glass to the person who makes ordinary days feel like something worth celebrating.

Memorial toast ending examples

To David: for the love he gave us, the stories we will keep telling, and the way his life still gathers us together.

In his honor, may we be a little kinder, a little braver, and a little more present with the people we love.

Do not end with uncertainty

Avoid endings like I guess that is it or anyway, cheers. They make the audience feel unsure. Write the closing line in advance and practice it exactly.

FAQ

What do you say before cheers?

Say who the toast is for and what you wish for them, then say please raise a glass.

Can I end with a quote?

You can, but it should be short and directly connected to the person. A personal wish usually lands better.

Should the ending rhyme?

No. A toast ending should sound natural, not like a forced poem.
