Read it through once as a whole, then fill it in from the middle out: the story first, then the quality it proves, then the opening, the couple, and the toast. Writing the story first stops you from choosing a quality you cannot prove.
- 1Opening. 'Good evening. For those I haven't met, I'm [YOUR NAME], and I've known [GROOM] since [WHEN AND WHERE], which means I've [ONE-LINE SUMMARY OF WHAT YOU'VE SEEN].'
- 2The quality. 'If you know [GROOM], you know he is [ONE QUALITY]. Not in a big, dramatic way. In a [SMALL, EVERYDAY WAY PEOPLE RECOGNISE] way.'
- 3The story. 'The clearest example I have is [WHEN]. [WHERE YOU WERE. WHAT WAS GOING WRONG. WHAT HE DID. WHAT IT COST HIM. HOW IT ENDED.]'
- 4The couple. 'Then [PARTNER] came along, and [WHAT CHANGED IN HIM]. [PARTNER], [ONE SPECIFIC THING YOU HAVE WATCHED THE TWO OF THEM DO].'
- 5The toast. 'So please raise your glasses. To [GROOM] and [PARTNER]: may you [ONE WISH THAT REPEATS THE QUALITY].'
The questions that fill the blanks
Blanks are easy to fill badly. 'Loyal.' 'Always there for me.' 'Perfect together.' These are true and they are also what every best man says. The questions below are designed to pull out the detail underneath the adjective. Answer them in a note on your phone before you write a single sentence of the speech.
- Opening: What is the first concrete thing you remember about him? An object, a sentence he said, a place.
- Quality: What does he do that nobody asked him to do? What do people count on him for without saying so?
- Story: When did that quality cost him something (time, sleep, money, pride) and he did it anyway? Where were you standing?
- Couple: What is one thing you have seen them do for each other that you would not have predicted? What is different about him in a room when they are in it?
- Toast: If they keep one habit for fifty years, which one should it be?
A completed example
“Good evening. For those I haven't met, I'm Owen, and I've known Liam since we were paired up for a science project in seventh grade, which means I've watched him take credit for my volcano for twenty years.
If you know Liam, you know he's patient. Not in a saintly way. In a 'will sit with you while you assemble the bookshelf wrong twice' way.
The clearest example I have is the winter of 2016. I had just failed my driving test for the second time and was, honestly, done. Liam didn't say anything encouraging. He just turned up every Saturday morning at eight, with two coffees, and drove me to the empty parking lot behind the garden centre. We did parallel parking for six weekends. He never once looked at his phone. I passed in March. He was more pleased than I was.
Then Hana came along, and the patience got a witness. Hana, I've seen you two wait forty minutes for a table without either of you checking the time, because you were still mid-conversation. I've seen him learn to make your grandmother's soup from a photo of a recipe card. And I've seen you talk him out of buying a third bicycle without ever raising your voice, which nobody else has managed.
So please raise your glasses. To Liam and Hana: may you always have the patience to wait for each other, and never need to.”
What each part is doing
The opening buys you credibility in one sentence. 'Twenty years' and 'my volcano' tell the room this is a real friendship with a real history, and the small joke lets everyone relax. You do not need more than that; the guests who know you are already smiling and the guests who don't now have a reason to listen.
The quality section is deliberately short and deliberately un-grand. 'Patient' on its own is a word on a card. 'Will sit with you while you assemble the bookshelf wrong twice' is a picture, and it prepares the room for the driving story without giving it away.
The story is where the minutes go, and it earns them by being specific: Saturday, eight o'clock, two coffees, the parking lot behind the garden centre, six weekends, March. None of those details are decorative. Each one makes the patience cost something, which is what makes it a virtue rather than a personality trait.
The couple section gives the partner three concrete moments, and one of them is a little funny (the third bicycle). That balance matters. If the couple section is all sincerity, it sags; if it is all jokes, it sounds like you do not know them. The toast then repeats the word 'patience' so the whole speech closes on the note it opened on.
Timing: where the minutes go
The completed example above is about 250 words, which plays at just over two minutes with a couple of pauses. The template stretches comfortably to four minutes. Here is how a four-minute version divides up at a natural pace of roughly 130 words per minute.
- Opening: 20 seconds, about 40 words.
- Quality: 15 seconds, about 30 words.
- Story: 90 seconds, about 190 words. This is the only section that should grow.
- Couple: 45 seconds, about 100 words.
- Toast: 15 seconds, about 30 words, said without looking at the card.
How to make it not sound like a template
Templates sound like templates when the connective tissue survives the edit. Once your details are in, go back through and delete every sentence that could appear in someone else's speech.
- Cut 'For those who don't know me' if the room is under forty people. They know you.
- Replace 'he's always been there for me' with the one time it mattered most.
- Swap any adjective you would use on a job reference (reliable, generous, loyal) for the behaviour that made you think of it.
- Say the partner's name at least twice. Say it in a sentence that is about them, not about the groom.
- Read it out loud. Anything you stumble over is a sentence you would never say in conversation. Rewrite it the way you would say it.
Template traps
Three ways this structure goes wrong, and the fix for each.
- Two stories. The template has one story slot for a reason. If you cannot choose, tell the one the partner has never heard.
- A story with a hidden victim. Anything where the punchline is someone else's embarrassment (the groom's mother, an ex, a friend not in the room) reads as cruelty from a microphone.
- A toast that introduces a new idea. If the speech was about patience and the toast is about adventure, the ending feels borrowed. Repeat the quality.
