Four minutes. Not because there is a rule, but because that is roughly how long a room full of people who have been drinking since the ceremony can stay with one voice before they start looking for the bathroom. The best man usually speaks after at least one other person, often after a meal has been delayed by photographs, and always to a crowd that is half strangers. Four minutes is generous under those conditions.
The reason speeches run long is not that people write too much. It is that they write the right amount and then add: a second story because the first one felt thin, a paragraph of adjectives to be safe, a thank-you to the caterers, and a joke they heard at another wedding. Each addition is thirty seconds. Four of them turn a tight four minutes into a baggy six.
The good news is that cutting is easier than writing. If you have a draft, the rest of this guide is a cut list. If you do not, the word counts below tell you exactly how much to write.
Word counts by length
These assume about 130 words per minute, which is a natural pace for someone reading a speech they have practised a few times. Nervous speakers go faster, so if you tend to rush, write to the lower number and slow down on the day.
- Two minutes: about 260 words. Right for a second best man, a very small wedding, or a late slot.
- Three minutes: about 390 words. The safe target when there are four or more speakers.
- Four minutes: about 520 words. The standard best man speech. One story, told properly.
- Five minutes: about 650 words. Fine if you are the only friend speaking and the story earns it.
- Past 700 words, you are no longer giving a toast. You are giving a talk, and the room will treat it as one.
When to go shorter
There are evenings where three minutes is the ceiling, and knowing them in advance is a kindness to everyone, especially yourself.
- You are the third or fourth speaker. Every minute of the earlier speeches is subtracted from the room's patience for yours.
- Speeches are before dinner. Hungry guests do not laugh as easily. Get them back to their plates.
- The wedding is outdoors, or the sound system is uncertain. Short speeches survive wind and bad microphones; long ones do not.
- There are two best men. Split the four minutes, and agree in advance who tells which story.
- You are nervous enough that you might rush. A three-minute speech rushed is still a speech. A five-minute speech rushed is a blur.
When five minutes is fine
If you are the only friend speaking, the couple's parents have kept their speeches short, dinner is done, and your story genuinely needs the space, five minutes is fine. The test is not the clock; it is whether every thirty-second block is doing something the previous block did not. A five-minute speech with one story, one turn toward the couple, and a clean toast will feel shorter than a three-minute speech with four small anecdotes.
What does not justify five minutes: a second story, a list of the groom's qualities, an explanation of the best man's duties, or thanking people who will be thanked by the couple anyway.
How to actually time it
Word counts get you close. Only your own voice gets you the truth. Do this once with a draft and once with the final version.
- 1Stand up, hold the speech the way you will hold it on the day, and read it aloud at the pace you would talk to a table of eight.
- 2Time it with your phone. Do not pause the timer when you stumble; you will stumble on the day too.
- 3Add fifteen percent for laughter, applause, and the walk to the microphone. A four-minute read is a four-and-a-half-minute speech.
- 4If you are over your target, cut from the list below, in order, and time it again.
The cut list, in order
Cut from the top of this list first. Each item removes time without removing anything the room will miss.
- 1The second story. Keep the one the partner has never heard, or the one that would make the groom's mother nod.
- 2The list of adjectives. 'Kind, loyal, funny, generous' is four words that mean nothing. The story already proved one of them; let it.
- 3The full history of how you met, if it is not the story. One sentence of context is enough.
- 4Inside jokes that three people will get. Save them for the bar afterwards, where they will land better.
- 5Thank-yous to the venue, the caterers, the bridesmaids, and the parents. The couple will do this. You are not the host.
- 6The 'I'm not a public speaker' apology. It costs fifteen seconds and lowers the room's expectations for no benefit.
- 7The second ending. If you have said 'please raise your glasses' once, anything after the toast is a rerun.
Signs you are running long in the room
Sometimes the draft was the right length and the room is not. Watch for these, and if you see two of them, skip to the couple section and the toast. Nobody will know what you left out.
- Cutlery. People pick up forks when they have decided the speech is background noise.
- The couple's smiles have gone polite. Their real smiles come back the moment you say their names together.
- You have said 'and another thing' or 'one more quick story.' The word 'quick' is a tell.
- The DJ or coordinator is standing near the microphone. They are managing a timeline you cannot see.
What a four-minute speech looks like on the page
Five paragraphs. The first is two or three sentences: who you are, how you know him, one small detail. The second is two sentences naming the quality. The third is the story, and it is the only long paragraph, eight to twelve sentences with a beginning, a turn, and an ending. The fourth is three or four sentences about the couple, with the partner's name in at least two of them. The fifth is the toast, two sentences at most.
If your draft has more than five paragraphs, one of them is probably an addition from the cut list. If it has fewer, the story is probably too short to carry the middle. Either way, the shape tells you where to look before the clock does.

Does the best man speech length change if I'm also the brother?
Not the length, but the material does. A brother has the heaviest stories in the room and should use them briefly. One sentence about a hard year says more than a paragraph. Keep the same three-to-five-minute target and spend the extra weight on restraint.
Should I time the speech with or without the laughs?
