01

Welcome and acknowledgment

Welcome mourners and allow space for several kinds of feeling.

Thank you for being here to remember [Parent]. Some of us knew [Parent] for a lifetime, and some for a shorter season. We have brought different memories, and we have all brought loss. There is room today for sadness, for gratitude, and for the laughter that sometimes arrives when we remember someone clearly.

Say it: Look up before you begin and take one steady breath.

02

An ordinary memory

Make a parent's care visible through one ordinary memory.

One memory I keep returning to is very simple. Before a long trip, [Parent] would stand by the door and ask whether I had eaten. It never mattered that I was already an adult, holding my keys and confidently explaining the route. There would be a piece of fruit pressed into my hand, or a sandwich wrapped for later. Care had a practical shape.

Say it: Speak slowly enough for the food pressed into your hand to be pictured.

03

What that care taught us

Remember the person with affection and human complexity.

That was how [Parent] loved many of us: by noticing what might be needed and doing something about it. There were other parts to the person, too: strong opinions, familiar jokes, days of impatience, and moments of unexpected tenderness. We remember a whole human being. I am grateful for the love we received, and for the ordinary habits through which it became visible.

Say it: Keep a gentle pace and allow yourself a breath between thoughts.

04

Farewell

Say goodbye gently and leave the memory with the room.

In the weeks ahead, I expect memory will find us in small places: at the front door, in a familiar recipe, in a question we almost pick up the phone to ask. We do not have to hurry past those moments. Today, we say goodbye with sorrow and affection. [Parent], thank you for the many ways you looked after us. We will carry what we can, and we will remember you.

Say it: Pause if you need to; let the final 'remember you' rest without a toast.

Why it works

  1. 1The opening permits mixed feelings instead of demanding one response.
  2. 2A piece of fruit or sandwich gives the memory a concrete center.
  3. 3The tribute remembers a whole person and leaves space for grief.
