01

Enter the classroom

Begin with a recognizable teaching practice.

[Teacher], as you retire from [School], I want to begin in your classroom. On [Ordinary School Occasion], I walked in while you were teaching [Accessible Topic]. There was [Specific Classroom Detail], and a student had just asked [Student Question, Anonymized]. You responded by [Teacher's Concrete Response]. I am [Speaker], [Leadership Role], and that moment told me something important about your work.

Say it: Keep the scene short and dignified.

02

Show the learning the practice produced

Recognize teaching through evidence rather than universal impact claims.

Later, during [Approved Student Activity], I heard a student ask [A More Developed Question]. The student was doing more than recalling a fact; they were trying to understand [Simple Description]. I thought back to your classroom, where you had made room for exactly that kind of thinking. You built it through [Concrete Teaching Routine], [Second Routine], and the care you took when [Common Classroom Challenge]. Some days the progress was visible. On other days, it arrived slowly. You respected both kinds of day. You gave students [Specific Opportunity] and a way to know what to try next.

Say it: Pause after the second student question.

03

Credit the wider school work

Include mentoring and collaboration without erasing colleagues.

Your contribution also reached the staff room. You helped [Colleague or Team] with [Specific Shared Project], and invited others to [Practical Professional Exchange]. When [New Teaching Approach] was introduced, you [How They Learned or Contributed]. Experience gave you a great deal to offer, and you remained interested in what others knew. We thank you for [Named School Contribution], with appreciation also for [Collaborators]. Several people here have their own stories of your help. We hope you hear those stories tonight and see the work others will continue.

Say it: Name collaborators clearly.

04

Welcome a life beyond the bell

Make retirement an opportunity for the teacher's own interests.

You have given [Accurate Tenure] to this work. Now we wish you time for [Announced Interest], mornings that can start at your chosen pace, and conversations that do not have to end when the bell rings. [Teacher], thank you for helping students ask better questions, and for helping colleagues think carefully about how to answer them. Congratulations on your retirement. We are proud to have worked beside you.

Say it: Leave a pause before 'Congratulations.'
